Become a Mutual Fund Distributor at ZERO Cost!

The Indian mutual fund industry has witnessed rapid growth in recent decades, with millions of investors turning to systematic investment plans (SIPs) and equity funds as a way to build long-term wealth. At the heart of this growth is a strong distribution network, led by intermediaries who help investors understand, select, and invest in mutual funds.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) is a non-profit government organization in the mutual fund sector that acts as a primary regulator of mutual funds in India under SEBI. They play an important role in regulating and standardizing the distribution system. Anyone who wants to distribute mutual funds in India, whether as an individual, corporate entity, or overseas entity, must be registered with AMFI and hold an ARN (AMFI Registration Number).

In this article, we will learn everything about AMFI Registration in India. Understand ARN & EUIN, eligibility, documents required, and the step-by-step process of registration in both Indian and overseas distributors. Ensure compliance with SEBI & AMFI guidelines and build investor trust.

What is AMFI?

AMFI stands for the Association of Mutual Funds in India. This organization was established on August 22, 1995. AMFI is an organization of SEBI-regulated mutual fund firms. AMFI currently has 43 SEBI-registered Asset Management Companies (AMCs) as its members. The mutual fund industry has established specified standards and principles, and AMFI works to respect those standards.

The objectives include:

  • It helps in promoting ethical and professional practices among mutual fund distributors.
  • Protecting the interests of investors.
  • Enhancing transparency and accountability in the industry.
  • It creates awareness about mutual funds among retail investors.

One of its most important roles is issuing ARNs (AMFI Registration Numbers), which are mandatory requirements for distributors who wish to sell or recommend mutual funds.

What is ARN and EUIN?

  • ARN (AMFI Registration Number): It is a unique code allotted to mutual fund distributors (individuals, corporates, banks, NBFCs, or overseas distributors). Without an ARN number, it is not legally possible to distribute mutual funds in India.
  • EUIN (Employee Unique Identification Number): It is an employee Unique Identification Number that is issued to employees, agents, or sales staff of distributors who interact with investors. This ensures accountability and also prevents mis-selling by distributors.

  • Ensuring that the AMFI-defined standards are adhered to by all AMCs and all other participants in the mutual fund business.
  • Raising awareness among investors and defending their interests, protecting the AMCs' interests.
  • Disciplining anybody who violates the AMFI-established code of conduct
  • Offering investors a secure and reliable platform via which they can register complaints against any entity, such as fund managers, brokers, or discovery managers.
  • Representing all parties involved in mutual fund issues, including the government, RBI, SEBI, etc.
  • To evaluate SEBI guidelines and directives and collaborate with them on issues relating to the mutual fund sector or any component of the same.

Only those who hold a legitimate ARN are permitted to market mutual funds to potential customers through brokers and other intermediaries. Investor confidence is higher in fund houses with a valid ARN since they are more knowledgeable. As a result, they can better direct them in terms of comprehending market trends and offering various mutual fund products in line with client requirements. Investors would be wise to verify the mutual fund firms' trustworthiness by looking up their ARN. Therefore, investors are always encouraged to examine the ARN of fund houses to make sure that they are legitimate before investing in mutual funds.
  • ARN Number is valid for 3 years.
  • Renewal requires refresher training or requalification in the NISM exam, along with updated KYC.

Note: Aadhaar linking is mandatory for Indian distributors to ensure authenticity and prevent fraud.

Final Thoughts

Becoming an AMFI-registered distributor is the first step to entering India’s fast-growing mutual fund industry. For Indian distributors, Aadhaar-based ARN/EUIN registration ensures quick and secure onboarding. For overseas distributors, additional proof of local regulatory authorization and embassy attestation strengthens compliance and protects investors globally.

The mutual funds market is full of ‘n’ number of brokers, agents, or distributors. These intermediaries assist the investors in all investment processes. Investors who come across dishonest brokers, mutual funds agents, or distributors, however, run the risk of losing their hard-earned cash. To safeguard against this, AMFI issues a unique AMFI Registration Number (ARN) to every eligible distributor.

An ARN is allotted only after the distributor meets all eligibility criteria, passes the required certifications, and proves to be reliable in carrying out responsibilities without compromising investors’ interests. Whether you are a financial advisor in India or an NRI-focused corporate abroad, AMFI registration is mandatory for distributing Indian mutual funds. By following the right process and maintaining compliance, distributors can build trust with investors and contribute to the healthy growth of India’s mutual fund industry.
