NPS Calculator (National Pension Scheme Calculator) is a tool that helps individuals estimate the corpus they can accumulate and the pension they can receive after retirement through their NPS investments. It takes into account factors like monthly contribution, expected return on investment, and the annuity rate to provide an estimate of the final pension. In this article, we will tell you how you can use an NPS calculator to plan your retirement easily.

What is an NPS Calculator?

The NPS calculator is an online finance tool that helps to estimate the maturity amount of your NPS investments. It considers various factors such as your investment amount, age, and investment strategy (Aggressive, Conservative, or Moderate). Based on your inputs, it calculates the final amount at maturity and the pension amount.

In the case of the National Pension Scheme, your investment is allocated to different asset classes such as equity, debt, and Government Securities. Thus, making it complicated to calculate the investment returns on your own. Here, the NPS calculator helps you by simplifying the calculations for you.

How to Use The NPS Calculator?

Investors can use the NPS calculator for two purposes: to calculate the maturity value or to calculate the monthly investment required to achieve a desired maturity value.

Steps to Calculate the Maturity Value:

1. Enter the monthly or yearly investments that you’re making towards the National Pension Scheme.

2. Then, choose your investment strategies (aggressive, moderate, or conservative). You can also choose to go ahead with a custom risk profile. These strategies determine the return you’ll receive on your investment.

3. Then, you will be required to enter your present age. This will allow the calculator to calculate your years to retirement at 60 years.

Based on all these factors, the NPS calculator will generate the total amount invested, the returns made on the investment, and the total maturity value.

Steps to Calculate the Required Monthly Investment:

1. Since we are determining the investment amount required to reach a certain maturity amount, we’ll start with the input of our desired maturity amount.

2. Next, select your investment strategy (aggressive, moderate, or conservative). These predetermined investment strategies determine the interest rates of your investment.

3. Lastly, you will be required to enter your present age.

On the basis of your inputs, the calculator will show you the investment amount required to reach your maturity amount. It considers your age, investment strategy, and the goal. You can also create different inflation rate scenarios to be more precise.

Formula for Calculating Pension Amounts

Here’s the formula to calculate your pension amounts, used by the NPS calculator:

Maturity Value (MV): P x (1 + R/N)^NT

PPrincipal invested
RThe expected rate of return
NThe number of times the growth rate compounds
TTenure of the investment

Let’s understand this formula better with an example.

Vijay, who is aged 25, is planning to invest in NPS for his retirement years. So, he is eager to use the NPS calculator. He is capable of investing ₹5,000 per month and has an aggressive investment strategy (to generate 14% return) over the next 35 years.

So, the following will be the inputs:

Principal invested: ₹21 Lakhs

Gains on principal invested: ₹5.41 Crore

Total maturity value: ₹5.62 Crore (Principal invested + Gains made on principal)

Lump Sum NPS withdrawn @40%, meaning he has withdrawn 60% of the money: ₹3.37 Crore

Money invested for annuities: ₹2.25 Crore

Monthly pension expected: ₹1.24 Lakh

However, you must note that the above example is only for understanding purposes. It doesn’t guarantee actual numbers.
