Get Investment Advice from India's Top Experts

For generations, we’ve been taught to work hard, save money, and invest in safe places. And while this traditional wisdom has its place, India is transforming rapidly. The country is no longer just about conservative financial planning; it’s now a land of startups, disruptive technologies, and bold innovations. From the local grocery store accepting UPI payments to rural schools adopting online education, India is innovating at every corner.

But here’s the real question, Are you investing in this new India?

To give investors a chance to ride this wave of innovation-led growth, HDFC Mutual Fund has launched a new offering, the HDFC Innovation Fund. This New Fund Offer (NFO) allows you to invest in companies that are actively shaping the future with new ideas, breakthrough technologies, and game-changing business models.

In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about the HDFC Innovation Fund, from its investment theme and strategy to potential risks and suitability.

What is the HDFC Innovation Fund?

The HDFC Innovation Fund is an open-ended equity-oriented thematic mutual fund scheme. Its primary focus is to invest in companies that are driven by innovation, be it through the products they create, the processes they modernize, or the business models they adopt. This fund aims to give investors a chance to invest in companies that are not just part of today’s economy but are actively building the economy of tomorrow.

This means the fund will look for companies that are:

  • Creating cutting-edge products or services
  • Utilising technology to revolutionise business processes
  • Employing unique business strategies to penetrate new markets.

These are companies with strong growth potential that could contribute to investors' long-term financial success.

Theme and Nature of the  HDFC Innovation Fund

The core philosophy of the fund revolves around investing in innovation-led companies across all sectors and market capitalization. The fund follows a thematic investment style, which means it concentrates on the main theme of innovation rather than being limited to a single industry or market capitalisation. This enables the fund to be sector agnostic and invest across large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap companies, regardless of their industry, provided that innovation is a key component of their business strategy.

HDFC Innovation Fund Investment Strategy and Stock Allocation Approach

AspectDetails
Investment StrategyBottom-up stock selection based on innovation, financial stability, and scalability
Primary FocusInnovation-led companies across sectors
Minimum Equity AllocationAt least 80% in equity instruments of innovation-led companies
Remaining AllocationUp to 20% in equity, debt, or money market instruments (at fund manager’s discretion)
Portfolio ObjectiveMaintain a balance of growth and risk while staying aligned with the innovation theme
Benchmark IndexNIFTY 500 TRI

HDFC Innovation Fund follows a bottom-up stock selection strategy. This implies that, regardless of the industry the company operates in, the emphasis is on identifying specific businesses first, based on their capacity for innovation. A company can be considered for portfolio inclusion once it satisfies the fund's requirements for innovation, financial stability, and scalability.

The equity instruments of companies deemed to be innovation-led will account for at least 80% of the fund's assets. Depending on the fund manager's opinion, the remaining amount could be invested in money market instruments, debt, or other equity. Maintaining a portfolio that balances growth and risk while adhering to the innovation theme is the main idea.

The performance of the fund will be compared to that of the NIFTY 500 TRI.

Fund Manager of HDFC Innovation Fund NFO

Mr. Amit Sinha, an experienced fund manager with 14 years of experience in the mutual fund industry, will oversee the fund. Mr. Sinha contributes thorough knowledge of thematic analysis and growth-focused investing. Under his direction, the fund seeks to invest in companies that are advancing in three main areas.

The first is product or service innovation, which includes companies creating cutting-edge devices, AI-powered instruments, and environmentally friendly technology.

Second is process innovation, which includes companies that are modernising their operations through the use of digital platforms, automation, or effective supply chains.

Third is business model innovation, in which businesses use strategies that go against conventional distribution models such as direct-to-consumer (D2C), subscription-based services or platform ecosystems.

What Kind of Companies Will the HDFC Innovation Fund Focus On?

HDFC Innovation Fund seeks out companies that are not just innovating but also executing well. These companies ought to be expanding their market share, outpacing the industry average, and exhibiting sound corporate governance. Supporting companies with a clear vision and the capacity to translate it into sustained profitability is the goal.

Importantly, the fund will not be exclusively dependent on conventional measures of valuation such as p.b or p.e ratios. Instead, it will take into account indicators that look ahead, such as scalability, business sustainability, and unit economics. As a result, it might contain companies that are not yet profitable but have great potential for expansion in the future, particularly in industries where innovation frequently comes before profitability.

Is This  HDFC Innovation Fund Right for You?

HDFC Innovation Fund is more suited for investors with a long-term investment horizon and a moderately high to high risk appetite. Since it is a thematic fund, it keeps a concentrated approach that depends on the performance of the innovation theme; thus, it is better suited for investors who understand the general nature of thematic investing and are willing to endure short-term volatility for potential long-term gains.

Understanding the Risks Involved in HDFC Innovation Fund

Innovation carries risk as well as opportunity. Innovative companies often deal more with uncertainty and may have more short-term fluctuations in performance. Returns might be affected by market mood, changes in regulations, and technical difficulties. Investors should thus enter this fund with an eye towards remaining invested for at least five years, if not longer.

Also, keep in mind that this is a thematic fund with only innovation as a sole focus, which means that it lacks the diversification of a broader equity fund. If the innovation theme underperforms or experiences a rough cycle, the returns of the fund may also suffer.
